Bayern hat aufgrund seiner starken wirtschaftlichen Position eine günstige Prognose mit leichten Bevölkerungswachstum zu erwarten. Insgesamt steigert sich die Einwohnerzahl langfristig um 7,4 % zwischen den Jahren 2020 und 2050, was sich innerhalb Bayerns jedoch sehr unterschiedlich entwickelt.

Somit gewinnen vor allem die Städte weiterhin an Zuwanderung, während weite Teile der ländlichen Gebiete aufgrund der natürlichen demographischen Entwicklung (Geburten/Sterberate) künftig weniger Einwohner haben werden. Selbst unter den Städten wird es große Unterschiede geben; Augsburg wächst langfristig und zahlreiche kleinere Städte entwicklen sich umgekehrt, wie z.B. Weiden in der Oberpfalz mit abnehmender Einwohnerzahl, sowie Würzburg als Großstadt mit überschaubaren Wachstum. Weiterhin expandieren auch Nürnberg als zweite Metropole mit zukünftiger Millionenbevökerung - als Agglomeration - und Regensburg, eine der vitalsten Großstädte mit gewaltigen Bedarf an jungen Arbeitskräften die schon gegenwärtig oft aus dem Ausland angeworben werden müssen. Natürlich führt die Metropole München als vitalstes Kraftzentrum Deutschlands die Dynamik des großen Bundeslandes deutlich an. Nur Frankfurt kann als urbanes Kraftfeld ähnliche Energiedichte vorweisen. München gilt auch in Zukunft als recht stark wachsender Standort für High Tech und bleibt eine kulturell sehr eigenständigen Stadt mit weltweit sehr bekannter Lebensqualität. Das zieht wohl nachhaltig sehr große Teile einer weltweit stark steigende Bewegung internationaler Migration nach Bayern, besonders aus den Schwellenländern mit Aussicht auf eine bessere Lebensqualität - die jenseits von Afrika, Indien und vielen weiteren Regionen mit ganz anderen Umständen als es in Bayern und Deutschland garnicht vorstellbar erscheint.
Somit steigen in Südbayern selbst die ländlichen Bereiche demographisch in Zukunft an, während der Norden im kleinstädtischen und ländlichen an Einwohner verliert. In Zukunft ist absehbar auch ein Trend von der (Groß)Stadt in die Dörfer oder Kleinstädte zu erwarten. Jedoch steht dem ein gewaltiger Sterbeüberschuss einer stark alternden Bevölkerung gegenüber die besonders auf dem Land oder Städten unter 20.000 Einwohner vertreten sind.
Eine Zuwanderung in die Dörfer und Kleinstädte müsste gewaltige Dimensionen annehmen um dort den bereits beginnenden Rückgang der Einwohnerzahlen aufzuhalten. Zwar steigt das Interesse vor allem bei einheimischen Städtern sowie einer eingesessenen Bevölkerung nach einem Leben in ländlicher Umgebung, bleibt aber jedoch in absoluten Zahlen zu gering um die große, vorhandene ältere Population zu kompensieren. Ganz ohne jede Migration würde die bayrische Einwohnerzahl die in Städten unter 20.000 Einw. oder Landgebieten leben, von 7.437.000 (stand 2020) auf 6.062.000 (Jahr 2050) sinken. (natürliche Bevölkerungsentwicklung von minus 18,5 % in der Zeit zwischen 2020 bis 2050)
Aufgrund eines stetigen Zuzuges auf's Land oder Kleinstadt wird der Stand im Jahr 2050 mit 6.907.000 Menschen dort wesentlich günstiger ausfallen. Trotz dieser recht vitalen Zuwanderung in ländliche Gebiete reichen die Migrationsbewegungen nicht aus um den starken demografischen Wandel dort in absoluten Zahlen zu kompensieren. Der positive Wanderungssaldo kann lediglich den künftig steigenden Sterbeüberschuss auf dem bayrischen Land dämpfen und reduziert das Minus auf 7,1% in der Zeit zwischen den Jahren 2020 und 2050.
